Towards a New Interior
"Gravity tell us an orientation, where ground is, once this is established - with - in the interior of a space, the horizontal needs to be established. This involves the interior and exterior, assuming parallel walls from the interior, making us think we know our orientation to the outside."
Bruce Nauman, "Dream Passage"
Course Description
This course borrows its title from Le Corbusier's Towards a New Architecture. The title suggests that a new discourse in interiors needs to be started in order to recognize and expand the scope of related disciplines that rely upon the interior. We begin with pragmatic and poetic descriptions of interiors in order to set the foundation for discussions. This includes defining what interior means as a series of layers that surround the body, therefore, leading to a definition of the role of the body in architecture. This foundation will be used to view the related disciplines that include clothing, furniture, painting, sculpture, writing, film, and politics. By viewing these disciplines through the lens of interiors, it allows us to see how these related disciplines rely upon the interior in order to complete their work. This seminar is not about the traditional practice of interiors, but rather, challenges it, offering new views in the design and occupation of the interior.
