Professional Practice

Course Description

The purpose of the course is to provide the student with an overview of the legal, ethical, and business issues associated with practice of architecture.

This course addresses the regulation of the practice of architecture; ethical issues associated with the professional practice; the business organizations used by architects in their practice; common forms of contracting for architectural services; lessons learned from various court decisions; typical business issues impacting the practice; and common business problem solving tools.

Prerequisite: Architecture 560R with a grade of at least C.

The text consists of business school cases, court cases, laws, AIA documents, and other assigned readings.

The class is structured as a mixture of lecture and discussion.

Attendance is mandatory.

Grading is based on two exams and on the quality of class participation.

Office hours are by appointment.
