CRP 384:
International Transportation Issues
Course Description
This course surveys transportation problems, planning practice, and policy issues in the international setting with an emphasis on the Asian countries, particularly focusing on China. We will take a case study approach, reviewing the experience across a wide range of economies in meeting mobility needs and broader societal objectives through planning, institutional, regulatory, technological, and fiscal approaches. A study tour to China may be organized, depending on the availability of funds. Main topics to be covered are:
- Trends in urbanization and motorization;
- Traffic mix and conflicts between motorized and non-motorized transportation;
- Congestion mitigation in mega-cities;
- Public transportation;
- Transportation and land use;
- Roadway pricing;
- Transportation safety;
- Green transportation and sustainability; and
- Experience in other international cities.
Case studies will be drawn from such cities as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Taipei, Bangkok, Mumbai, Curitiba, Bogota, London, and others of students' choices.
Textbooks
An electronic course reader will be provided on course topics.
Prerequisite
None.
Requirements
There are five requirements for completion of the course:
- A written report of study tour (10 points);
- A review of the literature on one of the above listed topics (10 points);
- A case study of either a student-select city, or of the client-select city when the client provides travel support for study tour (40 points);
- Mid-term and final presentation (20 points); and
- Class attendance and participation (20 points).
Letter grades will be assigned based on the points that students will have received by the end of the semester: A: >=90; B: <90 and >=80; C: <80 and >=70; D: <70 and >=60; F: <60.
