Landscape Architecture in Texas during the FDR ERA

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Seminar on advanced topics in the history and theory, including analysis, readings, and critiques of significant positions, practices and discourse. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. Prerequisite: Graduate standing, LA 382 L, and consent of the graduate advisor.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

The objective of this course is a concentrated effort to explore the period of Landscape Architecture from 1918 to 1940 with emphasis on the Great Depression and the recovery programs of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Administration. The anticipated result is to produce a documentation of FDR Era projects in Texas which still exist and may be endangered. Very little documentation exists or has not been brought together in one publication.

COURSE CONTENT

The course will focus on FDR Era projects in the State of Texas examining projects in housing, state and national parks, public works by the Work Projects Administration, rehabilitation of the eroded landscape, and constructed infrastructure. The following is a list of Units which will be covered in this course:

NOTE: This course will require an extensive amount of reading and archival research. Responsibility to perform research tasks on an independent basis will be required.

TEXTBOOKS

There is not textbooks for this course. There will be a course compendium which you may purchase from a local copier which may be purchase for the cost of printing.

REQUIRED READINGS

Required readings assignments will be handed out in class. These books and other material will be available on reserve in the Architecture Library. Students will be responsible for these readings on examinations.

EVALUATION

Examinations may be multiple choice, essay, oral or completion. Make up exams will be oral. The Mid Term is 40% of the final grade and the research project will be 60% of the final grade.
