ARC 560R/696:
Advanced Design
Course Description
This design studio will concentrate on the work and thought of a single architect, Louis Kahn. After roughly six weeks of preparatory design exercises, of reading and discussion of his writing, and of research into his design oeuvre (including--possibly--a field trip or two), students will be asked to design a significant institutional building "in the manner" of Louis Kahn, and to present and argue for that design in ways he might have. The objective is not just for students to learn more about this great modern architect, but for them to find themselves through immersion, through this experience in "virtual apprenticeship," as guided and orchestrated by the instructor.
