ARC 415:
Construction I

Objectives:

This course is the first of five in the construction sequence. It is intended to be an introduction to the production, assemblage, and performance of structural, envelope, and finish materials. Basic ideas of statics, solid mechanics, and systems integration will serve as constant theme in the discussion of each material.

Readings, lectures, discussions, projects, and field trips will investigate each material in the context of historical and cultural evolution, system performance, and architectural invention and technology. We will begin to define performance criteria that will serve as a point of departure from which we can innovate and invent in the context of contemporary issues.

Course Requirements:

Class attendance is mandatory.

Readings from textbook and supplementary handouts are to be completed before attending lecture on the dates specified on readings list or assigned in lecture. Quizzes may be given.

The lab session is a place for group discussion and experimentation of course material. Attendance in lab will be taken and any student missing more than one lab without written permission will be dropped from the course.

Several field trips are scheduled during lab time and will take the place of the discussion session for that particular week. Field trips are not mandatory and topics discussed during the field trips will not be included in exams. It is encouraged that students attend the field trips for their own enrichment.

Three exams are scheduled and will cover materials in all readings, lectures, and lab sessions up to a given date. The final exam is comprehensive.
