Preservation History and Theory

Instructor:
Michael Holleran

Exploration of the history and theory of historic preservation. Among the topics discussed will be the historical evolution of preservation standard approaches and problems within the field. The first section of the course explores the early history of preservation, and of preservation ideas, in Europe and the United States. The second part frames the philosophical questions of preservation: the ways significance is ascribed to artifacts, symbols, and forms in the environment; different ways of balancing significance with natural decay and with demands for change.

This is a required course for the Masters of Science in Historic Preservation, for the Preservation specialization within the Masters of City and Regional Planning, and for the M.Arch. Certificate in Historic Preservation. Others by permission of instructor.
