Instructor:
Anthony Alofsin

Description

Prerequisites for undergraduate architecture majors: Survey I (ARC 318K) and Survey II (ARC318L). This course provides a substantial writing component and fulfils part of the University's basic education requirement in writing.

Prerequisites for architecture graduate students: Survey I (387F or 388K) and Survey II (387G or 388L).

Both undergraduates and graduates outside the School of Architecture are welcomed to take the course with instructor's permission. Please note, however, this is a rigorous course that relies on students' previous study of architectural history.

Pedagogical Objectives

This is the third course in the School of Architecture's three-part introduction to the history of architecture. It offers a global perspective of buildings, their settings, and the dissemination of ideas about architecture in the twentieth century. Its focus is on modern architecture, its history, and the myths about that history. The goals of the course are to increase the student's familiarity with the complex history of modern architecture, augment writing and research skills, and develop critical skills and visual acuity.

Course Format

Bi-weekly lectures will introduce the issues and architecture of the twentieth century. Discussions will continue in weekly required section meetings. In addition, a series of films and videos are included to supplement study. Materials for the course will be available through the University's Blackboard system of on-line access.
