Course Summary

The Sound Building studio culminates the first five semesters of architectural education, as well as integrates all coursework during the sixth semester. The purpose of this comprehensive studio is to allow the conceptual development of a building with consideration of structural, mechanical, electrical, and site integration needs while simultaneously designing an exemplary piece of architecture. An understanding of how all of these systems work independently, as well as a whole, is critical to the creation of a working building.

The semester will begin with general research and site analysis as a group, and then move to individual design projects.

This will allow for a thorough analysis of precedents, typology, site investigation, systems and structural integration, as well as considerate and responsible design. The completed project should demonstrate broad capabilities in construction technology, climate technology, form and experiential factors, sociological and humanistic design concerns, architectural theory, and site/building relationships.

From the Catalog: 530T. Design VI.

Restricted to students in the School of Architecture. Intermediate-level studio addressing the requirements of sound buildings - their programmatic, spatial, and tectonic resolution and their relationships to the physical and social context of the site. Taught in a studio format by faculty members under the direction of a faculty coordinator. Fifteen studio hours a week for one semester. Prerequisite: Architecture 520M.

Bibliography

The studio should maintain a library of books that are used for research during the semester. These books should be shared with classmates and you are encouraged to look at and discuss new books that other students are bringing to the studio. The following texts are general reference books that you may want to incorporate in your library:

  • Allen, Edward: How Buildings Work
  • Allen, Edward: The Architect's Studio Companion
  • Ching, Francis: Architectural Graphics
  • Ching, Francis: Building Construction Illustrated
  • Ramsey, Sleeper: Architectural Graphics Standards
