ARC 388R:
Modern Japanese Architecture
Instructor:
Gerlinde Leiding
Course Description
The objective of this seminar is to identify the architectural qualities and theories which mark modern Japanese architecture.
The format will consist primarily of presentation and discussion of individual Japanese architects' works and writings.
Each student will be responsible for one in-depth research paper (15 to 20 pages) on one architect and a class presentation. In addition, a one-page summary of each architect's work—personal evaluation and posing of a pertinent question—has to be submitted the day of the presentation.
The quality of the paper/presentation and summaries determines the semester grade. A plus/minus grading scale will be used to fine-tune the final grade assessment.
Please note: Presentation should be accompanied by a thorough, typed research paper with footnotes and bibliography. Images used should be identified citing: Title of Building, Location, Date of Completion, Architect, and Source of Image.
