20th and 21st Century Designers

DESCRIPTION

A study of 20th & 21st Century designers who have impacted interior design, the philosophy of designers, and significant influences and innovations on movements of each respective decade of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century.

PREREQUISITES

The course is open to graduate students in Architecture, Interior Design, Fine Arts, and related fields.  

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The approach is oriented to the student being able to:

  • Describe the theory, philosophy, and the dominant technological, social and cultural influences on the development of 20th & 21st Century interiors, furniture, and accessories. 
  • Identify and classify the movements in interiors, furniture, and accessories and relate them to the evolution of interior design in the 20th and 21st Century.
  • Research in depth, lead discussion, and produce verbal and/or written reports on selected 20th and 21st Century phase(s) and/or designer(s).  

FORMAT

This is a seminar/discussion course where students will make in-class presentations of research on individual designer’s work, evolution of their work, philosophy, and theory.  Besides attending presentations, students will work on an in-depth research project about a significant 21st century designer which they will present at the end of the semester and submit a paper.  

EVALUATION

Grades will be based on in-class presentations (50%), drafts and outlines (20%) papers and projects (20%), quizzes (10%).

Students will research significant sources by designer’s name in the library.  Key sources will be on reserve in the Architecture Library.  The following books are also recommended for purchase:
