Description

This is the second course in the School of Architectureís three-part introduction to the history of architecture. It offers a global perspective of buildings and their settings created from around 1000 to the late-19th century. The graduate section is a seminar that builds upon the topics introduced in the undergraduate lectures and the theoretical studies students have undertaken in Theory I and Theory II. Class meetings will be devoted to broad themes introduced by a reading and examined through case studies, which will draw on a variety of time periods and geographic locations.

The educational objectives are to establish chronological and thematic frameworks upon which more advanced study of architecture may be based; develop skills of description and analysis; develop basic skills for research in architectural history; and to foster connections between the history and theory sequences.

Assignments and Evaluation

Each student will participate in two in-class presentations and write three papers on their choice of thematic topics. Two of the papers may be based on the in-class presentations. These papers should have about 5-7 pages of text (double-spaced, 12-pt type) plus necessary notes, illustrations, and bibliography. In addition, each student shall write a slightly longer essay of about 10 pages on a topic of his or her choice related to the scope of the course.

Texts

Suggested for purchase: Spiro Kostof, A History of Architecture: Settings and Rituals. Both the first (1985) and second (1995) editions are acceptable. Hugh Honour, Nikolaus Pevsner, et al., Penguin Dictionary of Architecture.
