Prospectus

The studio will begin with a minor exercise-10 days to 2 weeks allowing for semester start-up. The semester project will be divided into at least three major components, the first two having a time length of approximately 4 weeks each and the third extending the remainder of the semester. The final review will cover each component of the studio semester.

Brief Project Descriptions

The minor project exercise issued at the outset of the semester will address the design of a component closely related to the semester project. The component will serve as a vehicle for the study of human factors in design and assembly.

The major project will extend over the remainder of the studio semester and will be a large scale building for the design and assembly of commercial aircraft components. Industrial building typologies will be examined to understand and critique the interface between people and machines, their respective scale distinctions and spatial accommodations. Technologies of aircraft design have undergone amazing revolutions each decade, particularly from the 1940ıs to present day. Heavy structural rib construction has largely been replaced by composite wall construction yielding lighter, more fuel-efficient aircraft. Propulsion systems, fuels, and avionics have undergone significant changes. Manufacturing and assembly techniques have likewise undergone drastic changes. Overall concern for the human factors of worker health, safety and architecture of the workplace has emerged and created a definite obligation to closely reexamine design issues in industrial architecture.

The major project will extend the duration of the semester and will be divided into several parts in order to continuously change each studentıs the "focal length" of the design process. The course will be set up to allow for conceptual design at the outset of the project and will move on through to detailed development of specific components. The idea of the "making of architecture" will be a common thread of the studio throughout the semester.

Process

Wall pin-up reviews will be held on a daily basis after the semester gets underway, concluding with major reviews at the conclusion of the first project and intermediate points during the second project. Physical design responses will be expected continuously in formats of sketches, developmental drawings and models. Conventional means of design study and portrayal will be acceptable and computer generated studies in combination with conventional means will be highly encouraged. Design studies must address the theme of "complete at all times" and design excellence will be expected as will full attendance and daily participation.
