Construction I

This is the first course in the construction series. It is an introduction to construction materials and methods of construction.
The objective of the course is to develop in the student an early awareness of materials and structure.
Course Format: The course consists of two lectures per week in which building materials (wood, masonry, steel, and concrete) are presented in four distinct parts:
(1) History of the material (history of architecture)
(2) Properties of the material (potential and limitation)
(3) System (the type of systems they form)
(4) Case studies (current examples of buildings‹with an emphasis on the design theory of an individual architect's work)
In addition, the students are required to attend a laboratory once a week where they participate in field trips to manufacturing plants which produce building materials and building components. Students also visit construction sites where particular materials are being utilized in the buildingconstruction process.
