Vertical Studio

Gerlinde Leiding

The development of four discrete proposals titled myourtheir space shall culminate in a demonstration project labeled Center City Living in Austin.

This studio will challenge the aim and hidden image of the politically correct project by investigating the issue of Marketplace vs. "Ideality" (ideal and idealism).

Webster's Dictionary definitions of:

context : that which comes immediately before or after a passage and helps to explain

contexture : the weaving of parts into one body, structure, or style of composition (in writing)

culture : tillage or cultivation, mental development refinement

will guide the design process. Verbal, graphic, model explorations are part of seeking each individualšs representation of problem understanding, goal/idea formulation, and design solution.

The nature of the project requires familiarity with global historical domestic architecture. It calls for (re-)visiting texts such as:

Towards a New Architecture, Le Corbusier
Life and Death of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs
Community and Privacy, Serge Chermayeff
A Hut of Onešs Own, Ann Cline

Case studies of recent buildings will be found in the catalog of the "Internationale Bauausstellung Berlin 1987," additionally works by Fumihiko Maki and Riken Yamamoto will be studied.

Working in the studio is necessary to keep dialogue and skill development fresh.
