Lance Tatum

General Course Outline

This course will be a mini studio for students in the Community and Regional Planning Program. A second part of a 2-part course, it will specifically address design of small-scale projects in the context of Design within the City. Vehicles for course instruction will be an array of architectural projects ranging from a single building in a site to small, multiple buildings in a site and small-scale site planning exercises. Additionally, design exercises will be directed in analysis of projects of similar scale from various periods of architectural history. It will be expected that students registering for the course will have successfully completed Design for Planners I.

Materials

A small amount of permanent equipment and expendable materials will be required for course exercises. However, the palette of equipment and materials will be basic and major expenses are not expected. No materials should be purchased until after the first class meeting.

No specific text will be required. Each student will be directed in the preparation and recording of a sketchbook for course notes. A reading list will be issued at the outset of the course.

Attendance

Course attendance is expected for each class meeting. Instructor must be notified in case of expected absence or at least an attempt at notification should be made. 3 unexcused absences will have an adverse effect on the course grade.
