COURSE INTENTIONS

This is a drawing course for students who have had limited drawing experience, insufficient instruction, or who are otherwise dissatisfied with their achievement level in drawing. Its primary goals are the development of visual acuity and eye/hand coordination, improving the art of "graphic thinking," and building confidence in one's own level of skill.

COURSE FORMAT

Much of class time will be devoted to explication and demonstration, setting up and beginning drawings, and review and discussion of finished work, with the bulk of the drawing done outside class. Other kinds of drawing assignments, such as gestural work, life drawing or building sketching, will be attacked in a more conventional studio setting.

The first week of class will involve an exhibition of student work and/or diagnostic studies to ascertain the specific skills levels and strengths/weaknesses of the class, after which a semester's curriculum will be tailored for this particular group. It is possible that two, or even three groups will begin the semester working on different projects, to come together as one group around midterm. The kinds of drawing exercises and experiences we may engage in could include:

ˆ empathic/gestural studies of form and space
ˆ negative shape studies of form and space
ˆ building sketching
ˆ still-life drawing
ˆ life drawing from nude models
ˆ twig-to-branch-to-tree sequences
ˆ repetitive scrutiny series at various scales of concern
ˆ orthographic drawing
ˆ perspective drawing: empirical, conceptual, mechanical
