Topics in Sustainable Development

Instructor: Dr Steven A. Moore

This course is a multi-disciplinary graduate level seminar designed to critically explore the concept and practice of sustainable development from a variety of vantage points. The class will be composed of students representing business, architecture, planning, law, and public policy, and will be taught by UT faculty as well as outside speakers representing the full range of interest and experience with sustainable development. Topics for potential exploration include, the philosophical origins of sustainability; systems thinking; sustainable food systems; commerce in a sustainable world; government and market solutions to social and environmental problems; role of international governing institutions; sustainable community initiatives; sustainable architecture and planning; industrial ecology; and powering the future.

Enrollment will be limited to five students from each of the five disciplines and will be based on seniority and consent of the instructor. Assignments will include weekly critical reading reviews and a major paper completed by interdisciplinary research teams will be constituted of one member from each department.
