Preserving the UT Campus

Instructor: Prof. Jeffrey Chusid
Time: MTW 2:00-4:30 pm
Place: Preservation Lab WMB 3.112

Open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students, this class will examine the physical fabric of the UT campus, and look at how one undertakes the process of conserving what is important about a place. Depending on the interests of individual students, projects can be focused on elements of the landscape, buildings or urban design of the campus. Methodologies developed by the National Park Service for work on historic sites will serve as the guidelines for the projects. Students can learn about and utilize measured drawings, large-format photography, microscopy, CAD, GPS, GIS documentation or other relevant media and tools. The new Preservation lab can also be used to study materials conservation issues, such as cleaning or other stone treatments.

The result of the semesteršs work will be a report similar to that produced in the course of a professional historic preservation effort. Reports will be compiled and presented to the University, and considered as part of a long-term comprehensive study of the Campus.
