TWO NEW ENDOWED PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Dean Fritz Steiner, Hoppess scholarship recipient Flaviu Borcoman, Terry Forrester [B.Arch. '59], Dara Dru Bickham [B.A. '87], and Hoppess scholarship recipient Adam Benjamin Martin.

Dean Fritz Steiner and Assistant Dean Julie Hooper celebrated two new Endowed Presidential Scholarships (EPS) for the School of Architecture at President Powers' dinner reception on Tuesday, March 31. The EPS program was established in 1973 to provide merit-based scholarship support to outstanding UT Austin students. The C. Professional Program.

Richard Miller [B.Arch. '84] and Ray Beets represented Perkins+Will at the dinner. Terry Forrester [B.Arch. '59], husband of the late Nancy Forrester (daughter of Lily Rush Walker [B.Arch. '31] and Coulter Hoppess), and Dara Dru Bickham [B.A. '87] (daughter of Terry and Nancy Forrester) represented the Hoppess family.

HONORS DAY 2009

Distinguished Scholar and second-year B.Arch. student Stephen Hoang and Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs Jeanne Crawford.

On Saturday, April 4, The University of Texas at Austin celebrated Honors Day, an annual celebration of academic achievement. Introduced in 1948, Honors Day is the occasion when students who have achieved academic excellence are honored by administrative officials, academic deans, and members of the faculty. It serves as an important prelude to Commencement. The Honors Day Convocation includes ceremonial elements such as an academic procession, orange and white honors cords worn by students, heraldic banners, inspirational messages, and celebratory music.

Following a university-wide ceremony at Bass Concert Hall, students and parents joined Dean Fritz Steiner and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs Nichole Wiedemann for a School of Architecture brunch. Dean Steiner provided opening remarks touching on issues of sustainability and the economy, while Nichole Wiedemann acknowledged each Honors Day student present and provided closing remarks that gave a context to their significant achievements. Not only are the students at the top of their classes, she noted, but they excel in nationally top-ranked academic programs in architecture (#6 in DesignIntelligence rankings) and interior design (#9 in DesignIntelligence rankings). Of 315 total undergraduates in the School of Architecture, 109—a little more than a third—were acknowledged this year.

This year's School of Architecture honorees are:

"Perceiving Space: The Hal Box and Logan Wagner Collection of Mexican Architecture and Urban Design"

Every summer from 1985 to 1996, with the assistance of volunteer teams from Earthwatch, W.L. Moody, Jr. Centennial Professor Emeritus in Architecture and former dean of the School of Architecture Hal Box, FAIA, and Dr. Logan Wagner [M.Arch. '79; Ph.D. in Latin American Studies, with an architectural history concentration, '97] explored, photographed, measured, and made scale drawings of over ninety towns in Mexico. The collection of over 8,000 slides taken during this period was donated to the School of Architecture's Visual Resources Collection (VRC).

The exhibit highlights a selection of images from a collection that documents communal open spaces built in Mexico from 2000 B.C. to the present, concentrating on the 16th and 17th century fusion of Mesoamerican and European architecture and town planning. Contained in the collection are images of sacred open spaces formed by ancient pyramids and the plazas, atrios, cloisters, and towns' central plazas.

The Hal Box and Logan Wagner Collection of Mexican Architecture and Urban Design will be available in ARTstor later this spring and as part of the VRC's online Image Collection.

FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP

Dr. Danilo Udovicki-Selb recently returned from Florence where he consulted a thirteenth-century codex that likely belonged to Filippo Brunelleschi. Published in Strasbourg, the twelfth- and thirteenth-century capital of the cathedral builders, the codex was incorporated into the collection of the Badia Fiorentina library at the time of his death. The volume, over 400 pages, is a collection of treatises on descriptive geometry that represented the most advanced knowledge in statics of the time. Brunelleschi is known to have used descriptive geometry to build his dome, an art completely unknown in fifteenth-century Florence.

Dr. Nancy Kwallek, Director of the Interior Design program, presented a talk on April 2 on significant furniture designers' work featured in the Blanton Museum's "Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury" special exhibition.

Dr. Kwallek is the recipient of a Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) 2009 Fairchild Topical Issues Grant Award. She will use the grant to study the indoor air quality of interior materials on occupants' well-being and will use Engineering Professor Richard Corsi's testing equipment at the J. J. Pickle Research Campus.

Assistant Professor Ulrich Dangel presented a paper titled "Material Regionalism: Vorarlberg's Sustainable Timber Construction Tradition" at the 2009 ACSA Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, last month. He also moderated the paper session "Teaching Technology As Design," which brought together technology instructors in a dialogue and discourse surrounding the teaching of building technology.

On Monday, March 30, Dean Fritz Steiner presented a lecture at the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, as part of their Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Series, in which nationally and internationally prominent architects, designers, historians, and theorists present their work. His lecture, "Making Territory," focused on how cities and landscapes change and how technology connects us. The presentation also explored the sense of place and sense of region and how certain regional identities foster creativity.

Dean Steiner provided opening remarks in the University of Texas at San Antonio's "Great Cities Dialogue" series on April 8. The half-day event, organized by UTSA's College of Public Policy, gathered city and regional leaders in land development, urban and regional planning, conservation and architecture to discuss the history of natural resource conservation in San Antonio, its current status, and projections for the future.

Steiner co-authored with M. Elen Deming, Darrel G. Morrison, Arnold R. Alanen, Joan I. Nassauer, Patrick A. Mill, and Anne W. Spirn the article "Retrospect and Forecast: Remarks on the Occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Landscape Journal" in the volume 28, number 1, 2009, issue of the journal. Landscape Journal is produced by the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture and published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

Lake|Flato Architects received a 2009 Texas Medal of Arts in Architecture, presented at a gala ceremony on April 7 at the Long Center in Austin. The Texas Medal of Arts Awards are the signature event of the Texas Cultural Trust Council. The awards spotlight and celebrate the creative excellence, exemplary talents, and outstanding contributions by Texans in selected categories.

In 1984, David Lake, FAIA [B.S.A.S. '77] and Ted Flato, FAIA founded Lake|Flato Architects, which for the past 25 years has produced some of the most respected buildings in the state. The work produced by Lake and Flato exhibits an appreciation for the honesty of modernism, the pragmatic solutions of vernacular architecture, and a respect for the rich and varied context of the Texan landscape.

Professor emeritus Wayne Bell won the award in 2001.
