JOURNALS ON(_)LINE(S)

Joshua Bailey, fourth-year architecture student and library student associate, stands behind the mobile he designed for the Architecture and Planning Library.

The UT Austin Architecture and Planning Library (APL) recently installed a two-story mobile in the grand stairwell of Battle Hall.

The installation is intended to raise awareness about electronic journals made available through the University of Texas Libraries that focus on subjects related to the research needs of School of Architecture students, faculty, and staff.

Almost one-third of the 215 journal subscriptions at the APL are available online. The mobile is proportioned to represent this trend—quarter-scale booklets represent journal titles that can be found in print, while the symbol @e is used to represent electronic journals.

Together, the objects hanging in the stairwell illustrate technology's impact on journal publication and the transitional tension between printed and digital media.

The Journals On(_)line(s) installation, designed by architecture senior Josh Bailey, was funded in part by the School of Architecture's John Greene Taylor Endowment for Collections Enhancement and the University of Texas Libraries.

"The Passage to the New: Modern Architecture in Central Europe, 1890-1938, Photographs by Christopher Long"

During the mid-1980s, Christopher Long, professor in architectural history at The University of Texas at Austin, photographed the built environment in central and eastern Europe. Awarded a Fulbright to study at the University of Vienna, Long researched his dissertation on the life and work of architect and designer Josef Frank.

Trained as a cultural historian, Long began a self-taught crash course in architectural history. He walked the streets of Vienna, Hungary, and Poland. He visited and observed every Frank building and photographed other examples of Viennese modernism, including buildings by Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich, and Adolf Loos. He photographed during the cold winter months when light was clearest in order to overcome Austria's overcast weather and capture building facades often veiled in the shadows of their neighbors.

From 1994-1996, Professor Long lived and taught in Prague. He shot images of a city in transition being rebuilt after the fall of communism.

The Visual Resources Collection (VRC) collaborated with ARTstor, a digital library of over one million images licensed by The University of Texas Libraries, to catalog and digitize over two hundred of Professor Long's slides. The exhibit represents a selection of images from ARTstor's Christopher Long: Central European Architecture collection.

CSD REPORTS

An enthusiastic group gathered to welcome Mrs. Renteria to her new home, the second alley flat prototype.

ALLEY FLAT HOUSEWARMING
Over 150 people, including Congressman Lloyd Doggett and UT Austin President Bill Powers, joined the Alley Flat Initiative (AFI) on a warm August 27 evening to celebrate the housewarming of the second alley flat prototype. School of Architecture students were involved in both the design and construction of this wonderful little home, which has earned three stars from the Austin Energy Green Building Program, in addition to being 100% accessible.

Four generations of family were present to help welcome their grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Rentaria, into her new home, which is a accessory unit built on the alley behind their home. Both these homes are managed by an AFI partner, the Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation; and the design and construction process of the flat was managed by the Center for Sustainable Development's third partner on the project, the Austin Community Design and Development Center.

ZERO CARBON SYMPOSIUM
On August 28, Goldsmith Hall's Mebane Gallery was filled with students, faculty from across campus, and outside professionals wanting to learn about the current work being done in the Center for Sustainable Development to further the development of zero carbon communities. In rapid fire and accompanied by dynamic imagery, nine CSD faculty fellows and six collaborators from the LBJ Wildflower Center, Austin Energy, the Austin Community Design and Development Center, and the University of Texas at Austin's Facilities Department spoke of the current and future professional sustainability goals.

The speakers included Steve Windhager, Mark Simmons, and Emily Manderson, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center; Karl Rabago, Austin Energy; Michael Gatto, ACDDC; and Kent Butler, Sarah Dooling, Werner Lang, Steven Moore, Elizabeth Mueller, Michael Oden, Wilfried Wang, Patricia Wilson, and Ming Zhang from the School of Architecture.

Karl Rabago, Vice President of Distributed Energy Services at Austin Energy, spoke about the City of Austin's goals and challenges and exchanged ideas with UT faculty, the university's Director of Sustainability, Jim Walker [MRCRP '98], and other CSD collaborators about how research and action could most effectively conjoin to make real change in the near future. A sense of urgency was expressed by the crowd, and future symposia on this topic have been slated to address these and other ideas in greater detail in the coming months.

ALPHA RHO CHI – LOCAL ARCHITECTS SPEAK

Last Tuesday, Alpha Rho Chi, a professional-social fraternity for architecture and its allied arts, launched a new lunchtime lecture series focusing on local design talent. Alumnus Calvin Chen [B.Arch. '98] of Bercy Chen Studio (www.bcarc.com) initiated the series by discussing in-depth the inspiration and processes behind his firm's buildings. A desire for innovation marks the work of Bercy Chen, from pre-fabrication techniques to emergent materials.

Alpha Rho Chi would like to welcome Lecturer Charlton Lewis [B.Arch. '95], new faculty advisor and previous recipient of the Alpha Rho Chi medal, and thank Academic Advisor Garrett Loontjer, former advisor for the student organization.

Chen's lecture is the first in a series sponsored by the Dinocrates chapter of Alpha Rho Chi. This semester, we look forward to two more lectures to foster greater dialogue between students and professionals.

FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP

Nationally-renowned architect and urban designer Professor Sinclair Black of Black+Vernooy, Austin, Texas, presented a lecture at [Artspace] at Untitled on Thursday, September 10, in Oklahoma City. Considered by many to be the father of urban Austin, Black's insights and experiences are matured by decades of planning and collaborating with the downtown Austin business community. His well-recognized work in enhancing the walkability, connectivity, and public transportation of downtown Austin may provide valuable insights to the unique opportunities in Oklahoma City. The lecture is part of the continuing collaboration between Untitled's Art Forums program and the University of Oklahoma Bruce Goff Chair of Creative Architecture.

Associate Professor Louise Harpman recently served as a juror for the 54th annual Design Excellence Awards program of the Chicago AIA. As a member of the Distinguished Building Awards review panel, she joined fellow jurors Thomas Phifer, AIA, of Thomas Phifer and Partners (New York) and Lorcan O'Herlihy, FAIA, of Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects (Culver City, California).

On June 27, Associate Professor Danilo Udovicki-Selb spoke at an international seminar in Budapest, Hungary, "Sites of Convergence," about the encounters of East and West European architecture at the World Expositions. The topic he addressed was "Elusive Modernities: Stalin's and Hilter's Pavilions in Paris 1937."

Architecture of Discovery Green in Houston, Texas, designed by PageSoutherlandPage and Hargreaves Associates.

The Architecture of Discovery Green is a winner in Business Week and Architectural Record's 12th annual "Good Design is Good Business" Awards. PageSoutherlandPage Houston, led by Austin principal Professor Lawrence W. Speck, FAIA, designed the Architecture of Discovery Green, one of eight national projects to receive this year's Award of Excellence. The awards program recognizes projects with innovative architectural strategies that help businesses achieve specific goals. This year's winners will be published in Business Week and in the November issue of Architectural Record.

Discovery Green is an urban park that has converted 12 acres of land—mostly open parking lots—to an active civic amenity and green space in the heart of downtown Houston. The highly programmed park, located across from the George R. Brown Convention Center, has become a core of outdoor activity as well as a stimulus for residential and commercial development in downtown Houston.

"This is one of the most coveted of national architectural awards because it looks comprehensively at how buildings perform—aesthetically, socially, functionally and technically," says Speck. "Receiving it is a great honor for the whole large team of citizens, philanthropists, and professionals who helped create Discovery Green and who have contributed to its continuing success."

PageSoutherlandPage designed all the park's architectural elements as a model of sustainability. The architecture encompasses two restaurants, a park administration building, underground parking for more than 650 vehicles, and site features including a bandstand, a children's performance space, and various shade structures. The entire park is designed to receive LEED Gold certification.

For more information about the "Good Design is Good Business" Awards, visit the Architectural Record web site.

Professor Speck's firm, PageSoutherlandPage, has been selected by the Texas Society of Architects (TSA) for the 2009 Firm of the Year Award in honor of its significant contributions to the architectural profession and the community. The award will be presented at the TSA Convention in Houston in October.

Associate Professor Lois Weinthal's design project, "Berlin: A Renovation of Postcards," is included in the publication Installations by Architects by Ronit Eisenbach and Sarah Bonnemaison, published by Princeton Architectural Press. The project is included in the chapter on memory as it utilizes images that merge past and present day views of historical sites in Berlin. A selection of images in the book includes the project installation on advertising billboards in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse train station in 2004. The authors will be giving a lecture in November as part of the school's fall lecture series and will have an exhibit in Mebane Gallery that will include images of the project.

A selection of images donated by Professor Wilfried Wang to the school's Visual Resource Collection has been made available in ARTstor as a discreet collection. ARTstor has collaborated with the school to distribute 458 images of modern European and American architecture, with a special focus on museum architecture. Architects represented include: Alvar Aalto, Frank Gehry, Louis Kahn, Jose Rafael Moneo, Alvaro Siza, and Peter Zumthor. The images were digitized from slides housed in the School of Architecture's Visual Resources Collection and created by faculty member Wilfried Wang. Wang is the O'Neil Ford Centennial Professor in Architecture at the School of Architecture, as well as a practicing architect. Together with Barbara Hoidn, he founded the office of Hoidn Wang Partner in Berlin.
