Conservation Scientist

Fran Gale is an architectural conservator with over twenty years experience in the restoration of historic buildings and monuments. She has provided masonry consulting services on numerous projects including the University of Virginia Rotunda, Charlottesville; Vanderbilt Mansion, Hyde Park, New York;  Manhattan Supreme Court, New York, New York; Texas Heroes Monument, Galveston, Texas; Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, Florida; Wyoming State Capitol, Cheyenne, Wyoming; and the Territorial Penitentiary, Laramie, Wyoming.

Fran earned her MS in historic preservation from Columbia University, specializing in the conservation of architectural materials. She was a founding member of Columbia University's Center for Preservation Research where her projects included restoration work on the General Electric Building and on the Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library. As an architectural conservator for the National Park Service, Fran was involved with restoration of Statue of Liberty National Monument and Edison National Historic Site.

Fran teaches materials conservation in the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Texas School of Architecture and is the Director of the Architectural Conservation Laboratory. Her teaching experience also includes adjunct faculty positions at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania as well as continuing education sessions for professional organizations.

Fran lectures to preservation professionals and students on a variety of conservation issues and is the author of several technical articles including "Laboratory Testing for Historic Preservation Projects" for The Construction Specifier; "Specification Series: Preserving Masonry" for Architectural Record and "Stopping Rising Damp" for Masonry Construction. Fran provided contributions to Chapters 3-6 of Historic Building Facades and to "Chapter 63 Masonry" in ASTM Paint Testing Manual.

Fran is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works since 1987 and is a past Chair of AIC's Architectural Specialty Group. She is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation (JAIC). Fran also is a board member of the Association for Preservation Technology and a contributor to the APT Bulletin.
