Samantha Randall is an artist and designer experienced in material and product customization; her built projects include lighting, textile, and furniture design, private residences, large-scale public installations and the development of new prototypes. As an educator, her multi-media lectures, installations and artifacts bridge between art, design and philosophy, combining analog and digital techniques to explore the activities, materials and environments of everyday life. Her work is featured in the DaimlerChrysler North American Collection, The Cranbrook Museum of Art, the Detroit Free Press, and Surface Design Magazine, among others.
Joining the School of Architecture Faculty full-time in 2004, Professor Randall teaches Advanced Design and Foundation studios in the Interior Design and Architecture Programs, and digital communications with an emphasis on hybrid media. She is the Faculty Lead for the 2007 UT SolarD Team, working closely with the Center for Sustainable Development, the Summer Institute for Design with Climate, and other Faculty Advisors to guide an inter-disciplinary group of students as they design, build and test an innovative home powered solely by the sun for entry into the 2007 Solar Decathlon (sponsored by the Department of Energy). Randall's emphasis in this area is on social and material strategies for improving building design, using principles of collaboration or exchange as an emerging model for sustainable design practice.
