Architectural Interior Design
Lois Weinthal began teaching at the School of Architecture in 1999 and has co-developed the Architectural Interior Design Program. She received her Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design with additional studies in Metals. She received her Master of Architecture from Cranbrook Academy of Art with additional studies in Printmaking and Fibers. In New York City, she worked at the office of Peter Eisenman and contributed to the design of a performing arts center at Emory University with drawings published in M Emory Games, Rizzoli Publishing. Her work at the office of Richard Dattner and Associates led her to research the role of politics and interiors in public housing.
Lois Weinthal's research focuses on the socialist housing built in the former East Germany during the 1970's and 1980's. Her research uses the construction and demolition of the Berlin Wall as a reference in time to track the changes in politics and economics as it mirrors the changes in domestic architecture. Recent grants and publications include a Fulbright German Studies Seminar Fellowship; a chapter titled: 'Homes and Domestic Spaces' published in Contemporary German Culture Studies, Dr Alison Phipps, ed., Arnold Publishing, forthcoming 2002; Paper presented at 'Constructing Place' conference held by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, paper title: 'Domestic Space as Revealer of Political Change.'
Lois Weinthal's design work addresses the domestic interior. Projects begin from questions that she asks about the interior relating to representation and scale. Currently, her office located in the historic Sutton Hall building designed by Cass Gilbert has become a laboratory for testing the interior. A room has been built within her office allowing for questions to be asked about the way objects and possessions reside in a room, along with the poché of walls. Recent publications and exhibitions include the article 'Corners and Darts,' published in 'Thresholds 22': Fashion Issue, MIT Press, 2001; exhibition of work at 22 to Watch, at the Austin Museum of Art, Austin, Texas, 2002; Juror's Choice: 2001 Members' Show, Women and Their Work Gallery, Austin, Texas with works chosen by Associate Curator from the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas for exhibition, 2001.
