Design, Theory and Visual Communication
Nichole Wiedemann is an Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture, where she began to teach in 1997. She teaches graduate and undergraduate design studios, theory seminars, visual communications, and travel abroad programs. Currently, Wiedemann is the Director of Vertical Studios and Chair of the Curriculum Committee. In her teaching, research and practice, Wiedemann believes that the fundamental elements of architecture -program, site, material and representation- are places for continual investigation rather than simply givens in the architectural equation.
In 1997, Wiedemann received the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome. In Re-Collecting Rome, a traveling exhibition of drawings and models, she explores the urban fabric of Rome using the section as an intersecting plane linking the history of events and the history of places. She has maintained an independent practice since 1992 with projects and buildings in Georgia, Florida, Texas, and, most recently, Tennessee. She previously practiced in the offices of Andrea Clark Brown Architects and Donald Singer Architects in Florida. Her work has been presented in lectures including Emerging Practices at Auburn University and publications including Progressive Architecture.
Wiedemann has taught at the University of Florida, Rhode Island School of Design, and MIT. Most recently, she is a recipient of the Texas Excellence Teaching Award and the Hogg Urban Scholars Grant. She received her Bachelor of Design with honors from the University of Florida and her Master of Architecture from Princeton University in 1992.
