M Arch I Waiver Policies

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all waivers are finalized before the semester in which you should take the course as outlined on the M Arch I course sequence.

You should contact the instructor for the course to discuss a possible waiver and then initiate a waiver form, except for these courses:

  • Architectural Drawing waivers: The instructor will review admissions portfolios before the first class day of your first fall semester. You will be notified if the course is waived, required, or recommended but not required.
  • Digital Drawing & Fabrication waivers: The instructor will review admission portfolios before the first day of your first spring semester. You will be notified if the course is waived or required.
  • Construction I, II, and III waivers: Submit your documentation through the established process announced via email. The instructors will review your documentation and you will be notified if the course is waived or required.
  • Vertical studio waivers: If you have been waived from one vertical studio, and you would like to be considered for a second vertical studio waiver, you may make a request to your studio instructor and the Graduate Office to include a studio waiver review request as part of your Portfolio Review, which will be scheduled at the end of your second vertical studio. The Portfolio Review faculty panel will determine at that time if you are waived from a second vertical studio.

+ Architectural Drawing waivers must be finalized before the first class day of your first fall semester.
+ Digital Drawing & Fabrication waivers must be finalized before the first class day of your first spring semester.
+ Construction I waivers must be finalized before the first class day of your first fall semester.
+ Construction II waivers must be finalized before the first class day of your first spring semester in the program.
+ Construction III waivers must be finalized before the first class day of the fall semester in which you would take Construction III.
+ Construction IV waivers must be finalized before the first class day of the spring semester in which you would take Construction IV.
+ Technical Communication waivers must be finalized before the first class day of the semester in which you will take Integrative Studio. You may initiate a review through the Tech Comm Waiver Request form

Please note:

+ Electives or other courses taken as part of your graduate program at UT Austin cannot waive you from a foundation course requirement.

+ If you will be off-campus for any reason (Study Abroad, Professional Residency Program, etc.) during a semester in which you should take a course as outlined on the M Arch I course sequence and/or if it will be your last opportunity to take it before you plan to graduate, you must finalize all waivers by the last class day of the last semester you are on campus. The waivers must be finalized before you leave.

+ It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all degree requirement waivers  are finalized before the first class day of the semester in which you intend to graduate. This is to remove the presssure on instructors to review a delinquent waiver request that may affect a student's graduation.

+ Any exceptions to these waiver submission deadlines must be approved by the Graduate Adviser. You may submit an email petition that must include the reason(s) why the waiver(s) were not submitted by the established deadlines and a statement to acknowledge that failure to secure the waiver(s) by the established deadline(s) may prevent graduation in a given semester.
