Frequently Asked Questions about Internships

What is an internship?

An internship is any planning-related job, paid or unpaid, that involves 300 or more hours of work and that promises some professional development benefits. The "300 hour" rule is equivalent to 20 hours per week for a 15-week semester.

When do I do my internship?

Most students do their internships in the summer between their first and second years, although some students start an internship during the first year and some wait until their second year. Some students choose to do an internship outside of the Austin area over the summer. Arrange the internship whenever it becomes available, mid-semester, summer, etc. Don't let the University calendar be the reason for bypassing a promising position.

When do I register for my internship?

The only rule is that you finish your 300 hours before the end of the semester in which you register for your internship. Many students continue to work beyond the required 300 hours and beyond the end of the semester in which they register. Some students choose to register for the internship long after it is officially over.
