Planning

Course Description

This course can be offered at both the upper undergraduate level and the graduate level of planning program to provide comprehensive understanding of planning theory and practice. The course covers a broad range of topics from the background history of city planning to current planning approaches and practices in the areas of land use planning and growth management, transportation, suburban and urban design, local economic development, environmental planning, affordable housing, planning information systems, and citizen participation.

The course may consist of readings, lectures, lab practices, field tours, and class discussion, and each instructors can customize their own versions of syllabi based upon class goals and students' demands.

Theory and Practice in Planning (15 weeks for a Semester)

Understand purpose and process of planning, types of planning, citizen participation

Assign the 1st Individual Work on Analysis of Urban Growth Issues and Management Strategies

Urbanization and Growth Management

Understand the concepts of places, districts, and regions in urban context; development types and design considerations; concept of growth management; economic and preservation issues in urban growth management.

Legal Basis of Planning

Learn legal foundations of planning and types of regulations including federal, state legislation and zoning regulation

week 5
Presentation on the Analysis of Urban Growth Issues and Management Strategies

(This individual presentation urges students to analyze current problems in land development in modern cities and to examine theoretical and practical issues in establishing management strategies)

Environmental Planning and Management

Learn the issues of environment in planning and incorporation into sustainable management

week 7
Open Space and Conservation

Assign Case Study Work for the Presentation on the 10th Week

Transportation and Utilities in Planning

Case Study Presentations

(This individual case study analysis requires students to analyze a real urban planning project. Students present the issues and the process of the planning and make their critiques on any problems they identified.

(Each group is assigned to focus on different aspects (for example, environment, economy, transportation, housing) of a real urban planning project in local context. They present their analyses on problem identifications, methods, and planning process, and propose creative ideas to integrate different functions in planning.
