study abroad
The School of Architecture offers several opportunities for undergraduates to study architecture in settings abroad. The School of Architecture has a broad range of scholarships to assist students in being able to take advantage of these programs. These programs are available to students in advanced studios. For more specific information contact the program director.
Italy
The School of Architecture, the College of Liberal Arts, and the College of Fine Arts co-sponsor both a summer and a fall Study in Italy Program. Each program is taught at the Santa Chiara study center near Florence in Tuscany. The renovated historic facility provides a campus setting and allows the faculty to offer credits in architecture, the classics, art history, fine arts, philosophy, and Italian. The fall semester program also offers architecture majors advanced design credit. For further information, contact Smilja Milovanovic-Bertram.
Europe
The Europe Program offers students an entire fall semester of study in Western Europe, emphasizing a broad and integrated experience covering the buildings, urban fabric, and artifacts of England, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and the Netherlands. Each city visited presents its own special opportunities with regard to historical context, project focus and scope. The program is team-taught by the faculty and offers credit in advanced design, architectural history, and visual communication. For further information, contact Larry Doll.
Mexico
Offered during spring semesters, Studio Mexico is another unique study abroad opportunity. The program is held jointly with the School of Architecture at Iberoamericana in Mexico City and involves significant exchange with Mexican students, faculty, and officials. Students travel for five to six weeks to pre-Columbian sites, 16th century churches, small villages, and convents in the heart of Mexico. The remainder of the semester is spent in Austin completing design projects. Students earn credit in advanced design, architectural history, and visual communication. For further information, contact Juan Miró.
Supporting funds for participation in these travel abroad programs are available to undergraduate and graduate students by application through the School of Architecture.
