Richard Burdett is Director of the Urban Age Programme and Centennial Professor in Architecture and Urbanism at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and founding director of the LSE Cities Programme, a research and teaching centre which explores links between architecture, urban design and urban society. He recently co-curated the Global Cities exhibition at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, London. His latest appointment is as Principal Design Adviser for the London 2012 Olympics. Previously he was architectural adviser to the Mayor of London from 2001–2006, member of the
Greater London Authority's Architecture + Urbanism Unit and he sat on the City of Barcelona's Quality Committee. Burdett was founder of the 9H Gallery and the Architecture Foundation in London, and has been a key player in promoting design excellence among public and private sector organizations in the UK and Europe. He was Director of the 2006 Architecture Biennale in Venice on the subject of ‘Cities: architecture and society’ and he is chairman of the Jury for the 2007 Mies van der Rohe Prize.

The final presentation of the spring research studio, exploring the implications of the “Victory Connect” project, was held at the offices of the Beck Group. The research investigated development scenarios, infrastructure connectivity and public space connecting the new Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge with the Victory Development.

Final Presentation on Vision 2030

Students of the Dlab unveiled there development model for West Dallas at a public presentation held at the offices at Corgan Associates. The project, “Vision 2030,” envisions strategies for increasing the sustainability of the central city while bringing new development potential to the western banks of the Trinity River Corridor.

The Dlab studio presented its preliminary research on West Dallas, at the offices of Corgan Associates. The Dlab students are developing detailed development scenarios, integrating new development density with transportation infrastructure, landscape systems and housing. The studio is being sponsored by West Dallas Investments.
Juan Busquets

A world-renowned urban planner, urban designer, and architect, Busquets served as Head of Urban Planning for the Barcelona City Council during the formative years, from 1983 to 1989, and in the preparations for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, including the New Downtowns for the City program and the improvement process for existing neighborhoods. In 1969 he was a founding member of the Laboratorio de Urbanismo in Barcelona and undertook a long-term study of squatter settlements in Barcelona and other Southern European cities, for which he received the Spanish National Award for Town Planning in 1981, winning the award again in 1985 for his
masterplan for Lerida's old town. Busquets has participated in strategic urban planning and design for the cities of Den Haag, Lisbon, Marseille, Rotterdam, Singapore, and Sao Paulo—most involving public-private partnerships—having also completed projects for the modern center of Trento, Italy; Villanova, Spain; and for housing in the Maquinista development of Barcelona. In 2002 his team won the International Competition for La Lanterna in Trieste, and the City Center for Nesselande in The Netherlands. His urban rehabilitation strategy for Toledo, Spain in 2000, and the publication Toledo y su futuro was awarded a national prize and the Premio Europeo Gubbio 2000, and he is presently at work

Students of the Dlab presented their work on the future of the west bank of the Trinity River Corridor in a public presentation. T. K. Davis, Director of the Nashville Civic Design Center offered critical insight, along with members of the Dallas Community.

Jerry Van Eyck Lecture

Jerry Van Eyck a partner of West 8, Landscape Architects and Planners with offices in Rotterdam and New York, lectured on the global scope of their recent work at the UT Austin, School of Architecture, sponsored by the Dlab.
Jerry van Eyck graduated Cum Laude from the Eindhoven Design Academy with a degree in Industrial Design and Landscape Architecture in 1992 and founded IRONYX, Office/Laboratory/Workshop for Architectural design, that same year. For seven years Mr. van Eyck managed and designed various projects across Europe. In 1999, he integrated with West 8 urban design & landscape
architecture b.v. Holding the position of Lead Designer specialized in public space design, Mr. van Eyck lead many projects, worked with international teams and won international competitions. In 2003, Mr. van Eyck became partner of West 8 urban design & landscape architecture b.v.
