Brown University Library Center for Digital Initiatives hosts the Dana and Vera Reynolds Collection, an assembly of photographic and textual sources chronicling the events surrounding the 1923 Kanto Earthquake. The collection includes an album that features some of the earliest photographs of the destruction taken by Americans, and consists of over 100 original photographs taken in Yokohama, Kyoto, Shanghai, and Hawaii, as well as many photographs purchased in Japan that document the devastation. Additional items include newspaper clippings, photographic portraits of the Reynolds family, telegrams, postcards, and travel keepsakes, including ship passenger lists, itineraries, programs and menus.

Reed College Artists’ Book website is an online reference guide to artists‘ books and the significant role they have played among the avant-garde of Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and the United States, from the turn of the last century to the present. The Reed College collection holds approximately 1,000 books including the most significant 20th century and contemporary artists’ books, among them livre d’artiste, avant-garde, conceptual, and contemporary works. Individual web pages for sixteen of the most significant book works contain a gallery of images to navigate the entire work, a brief biography on the artist, a description of the book and the books colophon.

The California State University IMAGE Project has assembled almost 75,000 images for into its WorldImages database (formerly known as WorldArt). Organized into portfolios, the database includes a wide range of content from around the globe including images of cities and building technology, religious and cultural art and artifacts, architecture, material culture, and more. In addition WorldImages hosts a few special collections including faculty contributions, special exhibits and the Sourisseau Academy Clark B. Waterhouse Collection.

The Victoria and Albert Museum has launched a Beta version of Search the Collections taking its online collection from 55,000 object records to over a million. Records have been taken from the V&A’s existing collection, and are in dynamic state of process with new information being added over time. As work on the site continues, the V&A plans to incorporate crowd sourcing, an API, saved searches and additional linking.

As part of a larger effort to increase the availability of its photo archives, Oregon State University released a set of 117 images to Flickr Commons that chronicle the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) experience during the Great Depression. OSU is the first university to utilize Flickr Commons to broaden access to visual resources and has already released two subsequent image sets with future archive contributions planned to focus on natural resources, environmental history, forestry, and agriculture.
