Austin’s
land-use plan of 1928 relegated industry and people of color to
the east side of the current Interstate 35. As a result, people
in these neighborhoods have been adversely impacted by polluting
industries, heavy traffic, noise, and other environmental risks.
Families are particularly concerned about the consequences of industrial
pollutants for children, who walk through the neighborhood on a
daily basis and who are at more immediate risk than most adults.
