interactive maps

To complement our formal GIS report, our GIS data is also available for download and display in ArcReader, ESRI’s free, interactive GIS program. With ArcReader, you can choose which information to display on the map, zoom in and out, and use the identification tool to learn more about the different points and layers displayed on the map. The identification and hotlink tools also let you navigate to children’s own photos and drawings. Different maps can be saved as images and printed depending on what information is of interest. You can also draw or highlight different areas using the various drawing tools.

To view the maps in ArcReader, you need to download and unzip both the map folder and ArcReader. ArcReader, which is a free program, needs to be installed on your hard drive following the instructions provided in the tutorial.

There are two map folders available for download: Comprehensive Zavala Map, and Race, Industry and Schools Map. Each map folder includes two sub-folders: “data” and “pmf”. Open the pmf folder, click on the “ESRI published map” file, and it will open in ArcReader. Note: you need to download and install ArcReader before you can view the maps.

User Driven Map Interface
We have also created a user-driven mashup built on the online service Community Walk, which shows school children’s selected locations in Google Maps and Google Earth. Children’s own photographs and drawings are housed in Flickr and are connected to each point on the map. In addition, community members may add points to the map, or add photographs and comments to existing points. Our intent is to build on the children’s investigation by extending the conversation about environmental justice in East Austin into the community as a whole. Participation in this mashup is limited to Friends of the Project and is monitored by PODER, and the site is still under development.
