GIS and Vis-Com course teaches students to use GIS and several Visual Communication tools like Photoshop, InDesign, Sketchup and Google Earth. Dr. Jiao has set up this course in a way so that students can have both the theoretical and practical knowledge of using these tools in an efficient manner.
Students learn the theory in class time and practice the tools in lab time in the computer lab. GIS is taught through the first half of the semester and visual communication tools are taught on the second half of the semester. Students work individually throughout the semester and in the end, for the Term Final project, they form groups and work together to solve planning and design related problems of different neighborhoods. Last year the class worked on different community centers of Austin and some sites of Leander which are worthy of publishing here.
