If you plan ANY international activity, carefully read the student travel policy for international locations and the instructions below to determine if your travel plans fall into one of the two categories. If so, follow the steps provided by the Study Abroad Office.

Travel funds will not be released until travel authorization from the Study Abroad office is confirmed. You may forward the authorization email to the Graduate Admissions and Scholarship Coordinator.

CATEGORY 1 | APPROVED STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

International travel must be a required component of the course. Course must have approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and the UT Office of the Registrar.

These include:

  • Sustainable Architecture and Design in Germany - Vince Snyder (Summer)
  • Study in Italy - Smilja Milovanovic (Fall)
  • Architecture in Europe - Elizabeth Danze/John Blood/Larry Doll (Fall 
  • Studio Mexico/Spain - Juan Miro (Spring)
  • Advanced Design Studio in Brazil (or other) - Barbara Hoidn (Spring)
  • Architectural Field Trip in Ecuador (or other) - Wilfried Wang (Fall)

Steps to Ensure Compliance with University Policies and Procedures:

  1. After your instructor enrolls you in MySAO Portal, complete the MySAO Portal forms.
  2. Register with International SOS."Member Login" number 11BSGC000037 . Once logged in, complete both the mandatory "Add Trip" and "Emergency Record" (This requires you to enter your information a second time. The information is not shared from MySAO Portal.)
  3. Complete payment for mandatory enrollment in Overseas Insurance ($19/week). Note: These charges will appear on your "What I Owe" page.

CATEGORY 2 | OTHER INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Any international activity that is organized or sponsored by the school and/or is not a required component of a course.

These include:

  • Professional Residency Program
  • Studio Field Trips (participation not required)
  • Registered or Sponsored Student Organization Travel
  • Individual student travel for field work or research
  • Travel to an international conference or meeting

Steps to Ensure Compliance with University Policies and Procedures:

Begin these steps at least one month prior to your planned departure date.

  1. If traveling to a UT-Restricted Region, you must obtain the required travel authorization. Complete the Restricted Region Travel Request and submit with a description for the reason of travel to the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs. Allow more time for travel approval to a restricted region.
  2. Complete and submit the the Interational Travel Request Authorization Form and follow the International Office's travel authorization instructions. Because the School of Architecture is not departmentalized, the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs may sign off on "Part III".
  3. Create an International Travel Registry record.
  4. Register with International SOS."Member Login" number 11BSGC000037 . Once logged in, complete both the mandatory "Add Trip" and "Emergency Record"
  5. Review the Online Travel Workshop.
  6. Complete payment for mandatory enrollment in Overseas Insurance ($19/week). Note: These charges will appear on your "What I Owe" page.

Funding notes:

  • Only students on approved programs with required travel are eligible to request an increase in the amount of aid (loans) they receive from the Office of Financial Aid.
  • All students are eligible for the International Education Fee Scholarship. The deadline is March 1 for summer/fall travel and October 1 for spring travel. You should apply if you think you may travel internationally for any reason. Your plans do not have to be finalized to apply.
