Residential attic ventilation is important for the control of attic temperatures during the cooling season, and to ventilate water vapor in the heating season. This paper investigates the capabilities of different natural attic ventilation schemes using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modeling. Findings indicate that both soffit/ridge and gable ventilation strategies provide useful levels of natural attic ventilation, however, the gable ventilation system produces an uneven thermal distribution that warrants caution when assuming a “well-mixed” environment for thermal or species calculations..
