We often rush when travelling through a stairway, trying to escape these secondhand spaces for our actual destinations. But what if a stairway became a destination and a place for surprise and wonder? "Laity" combines both prosaic and prodigious materials to produce a propitious production within a common stairway. Dichroic film transmits color on the walls and one is able to look through the object only when parallel to the cardboard corrugations. A person's interaction with the object disrupts the light produced from the center of the wunderkammer, creating a new composition with their silhouette upon the walls as they pass by and through. Layperson interaction and self-perception were design values for this project and are accomplished by the wonder that the project creates in a normally not so wonder-ful space.
