Goldsmith Talks: 'Reconversão' Film Screening

Reconversao

The Materials Lab hosts a screening of Reconversão (Reconversion), a survey of works by Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, 2011 winner of the Pritzker Prize. In the words of the Pritzker jury, Souto de Moura’s work “requires an intense encounter not a quick glance…like poetry, it is able to communicate emotionally to those who take the time to listen.” Director Thom Anderson overlays footage of the buildings with insightful narration that flows between the architect’s poetic writings, the words of mentors Alvaro Siza and Aldo Rossi, bits of biography and historical context, and insightful musings. The projects featured in the film span the three decades of Souto de Mouro’s career thus far, showing a diverse range of scale – from his well-known houses to the Braga Municipal Stadium – as well as projects unrealized or abandoned.

Goldsmith Talks is an open-format series of presentations organized by UTSOA faculty, staff, and students. the series aims to encourage and promote presentations that are outside of the scope of the main lecture series. Examples are: invited seminar presentations, book talks, lectures by designers and scholars who may be in Austin for another engagement, round-table discussions, film screenings, product demonstrations, or any other activity related to research, scholarship, and teaching activities and at the school. The format provides a platform for encouraging the dissemination of work by visitors and members of our community.
