Claire Hempel, MSCRP '12
Why did you choose The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture?
My choice of the CRP program at UT Austin was one of the easiest decisions I have had to make. Dean Butler was a great role model for many reasons, but when we met and he relayed his belief that planning, landscape architecture, and urban design are compatible studies and a cornerstone of excellent cities, my decision was solidified.
Describe your current role and the work that you do.
I am a Principal with Design Workshop, Inc. and co-lead our Austin studio. Our practice spans many project types, from large-scale regional planning for municipalities, to park planning and design to outdoor spaces for people of all different scales. Inherent in all of our projects, is the idea that projects that positively impact the world must focus on aspects of the environment, community, economics, and art.
What’s something you’ve worked on recently?
Zilker Park Vision Plan
Downtown Georgetown Master Plan
Glendale Regional Park in Salt Lake City
San Antonio Bike Network Master Plan
City Park in Buda
Northline, Leander
St. Austin Mixed Use development
How did UTSOA prepare you for your career?
When I was in school, Austin was a living lab that demonstrated what challenges a growing city faces, from political pressures, displacement, cost of living crises, the old versus new, deciding which historic stories to honor, and more. My classes were able to use real-life, current examples of challenges in Austin to demonstrate concepts we were learning in class.
What is an important lesson you learned here that has stayed with you?
It is important to keep your ties to your school after graduation, especially if you remain in the city in which you graduated. I have had the opportunity to stay involved with UTSOA in the decade since I graduated through guest lectures, juries for project reviews, and with the ULI Hines student competition. It is incredibly rewarding to see the school grow and continually strengthen the program, and meet the students who will bring their creativity and innovation to the world.
What were some of the more memorable classes or experiences from your time at the school?
I really loved my time at graduate school, especially having been in the professional world for 8 years prior to going back to school. I made friendships that have lasted through the decade, and some even led to fulfilling project work. I credit Dr. Sarah Dooling with memorable classes and lessons about urban ecology, and the way she taught to always challenge your thinking. Finally, I was in grad school during the last census (2010), and that led to an appreciation of the data that is generated every ten years.
