Architectural Conservation: Field Methods (ARC 385T) introduces students to the principles and practice of architectural materials conservation through the on-site investigation of historic structures. The course explores historic building materials and systems, common deterioration processes, condition assessment methods, and strategies for diagnosing building deficiencies and developing preservation treatments. Through lectures, readings, field investigations, and collaborative project work, students gain hands-on experience documenting existing conditions, identifying causes of material deterioration, and preparing professional conservation reports. A semester-long field project provides practical experience in conducting a condition assessment and developing treatment recommendations for a significant historic property.
