How do community-driven designs move from idea to realization? If there isn’t dedicated funding already identified, a process of advocacy and coalition building is necessary to rally support and identify paths toward implementation. As designers take on models of public interest design, this advocacy and engagement is an essential component of bringing a design to fruition.
In this seminar, we will study the work of firms who have applied design skills of visualization, scenario testing, and strategic thinking to building support for their design proposals, such as AGENCY LP, scape, Design Workshop, RIOS, the Detroit Community Design Center, and the Small Center for Collaborative Design, as well as models of graphic advocacy developed by the Center for Urban Pedagogy. We will put these strategies into practice by developing a public exhibition that advocates for a greenway in South Pharr. We will engage with leaders in South Pharr, including the youth who shaped the design proposal, representatives from city and county government, and community organizers concerned with environmental issues. The design proposal illustrations will be expanded to include recommendations for implementation and maintenance, based on similar greenway initiatives. The resulting exhibition will be displayed in South Pharr at the public library to promote the design proposal and contribute to public discourse on connectivity improvements.
