CREATIVE CONTROL

First Summer Session
ARC 328D / ARC 380C
Instructor: Tyler Swingle

Craftsmanship and computation have filtered into the field of architecture with digital technologies and fabrication. As tools of the profession, they have advanced the practice from mass production to individualization. They have also dissolved distinctions between programmers, designers, makers and architects. This course builds a connective arc between computation and craft using digital softwares Rhino, Grasshopper and various plug-ins alongside fabrication facilities such cutting, milling and 3D printing. In a series of weekly exploratory exercises, the class will couple different methods of computation with fabrication techniques. The focus will be on using computational solvers to find physical forms or define fabrication techniques. The exercises will be sequential and progressively develop designs for a physical object that either floats on water or falls through the air. Physically testing of the outcomes is mandatory, and we will drop objects off balconies and throw them in water.

Proficiency in either computation or craftsmanship is not needed, but basic understandings are recommended!
