City Forum | Coping With Density: Challenges Facing American And Asian Cities | Ming-Chun Lee and Ming Zhang

This city forum will explore physical, infrastructural and political challenges facing Asian and American cities in the context of increasing densification, with specific examples drawn from China, Taiwan and the Austin Metropolitan Area.

MING-CHUN LEE Assistant Professor in the Community and Regional Planning Program at the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin

Dr. Lee teaches and conducts research in the areas of community technology, e-government, digital democracy, and issues around media policy and public access to information and communication technology (ICT). Specific areas of expertise include: 1) community-based technology initiatives aimed at linking community development efforts with the opportunities that ICT presents; 2) Internet-based online public education and community problem solving tools providing usable/practical knowledge for public policy and city planning; 3) value-sensitive design approach to e-government/digital government accounting for human values in a comprehensive manner throughout the design process of online technological systems.

MING ZHANG Assistant Professor in the Community and Regional Planning Program at the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin

Dr. Zhang’s research and teaching interests include urban transportation planning, transportation impacts on land use, urban form and travel behavior, GIS applications in urban and transportation planning, and land use/transportation issues in developing countries. His recent research has focused on the influence of the built environment on travel mode choice for work and non-work purposes, development of metrics of urban form, mobility performance measures, and strategy for integrated land use/transportation development in Chinese cities. Dr. Zhang has published (in both English and Chinese) over 20 journal articles and book chapters. His recent publications include "The role of land use in travel mode choice: Evidence from Boston and Hong Kong" in Journal of American Planning Association (2004) and "Exploring the relationship between the built environment and non-work travel through time-use analysis" in Journal of Landscape and Urban Planning (2004).
