Field Trip: Honea Woodworks and Steel House MFG
We toured two local fabrication shops in South Austin, Honea Woodworks and Steel House MFG.
Honea Woodworks is a professional custom cabinets and woodworking shop in South Austin. They have worked with a variety of architects, designers and builders in Austin, including Dick Clark, Laura Britt Design, Domi Design and Steel House MFG. Honea uses formaldehyde-free materials, sustainable forested lumber, and low VOC finishes applied in a controlled environment to reduce harmful emissions by over 99 percent. We toured their design room and fabrication shop, where they walked us through their design process – from shop drawings and designing to fabrication and finishing.
Steel House MFG is an architectural fabrication shop that has worked with some of the top builders and architects in Austin. They work with steel and other metals to produce the metalwork that is visible in buildings: railings, stairways, facades, furniture. Some of their projects include the W Hotel and the exterior Corten cladding at the Brew Exchange. We toured their 14,000 square foot facility in South Austin, which houses a variety of machinery including hydraulic shear, CNC press brake, and CNC plasma cutter. They gave us a presentation on the trends and process of working with steel and then led us on a tour of their fabrication shop and yard.
