Goldsmith Talks: Flavio de Carvalho - Eccentricity and Utopia

Flavio de Carvalho was unlike any other early 20th century architect. Even in his Brazilian context, he more closely aligned with the vanguards in literature and art than with the country’s first modern architects who eventually came to dominate the historical narratives. De Carvalho—through as many means as he had time to pursue, including writing, painting, building, and performing—speculated a far more radical path for a Brazilian modern architecture that never took place. De Carvalho’s project evaded sterile homogeneity and eager acceptance of foreign ideas and instead sought to question the very way we are social and how the world around us should reflect who we really are.
Luca Senise (Bachelor of Architecture and Plan II, 2016) will present this talk consisting of a historical survey of Flavio’s context and work, followed by an analysis of his legacy and the impacts of his projects.

"Goldsmith Talks" is an open-format series of presentations organized by UTSOA faculty, staff, and students. Goldsmith Talks aims to encourage and promote presentations that are outside of the scope of the main lecture series. Examples are: invited seminar presentations, book talks, lectures by designers and scholars who may be in Austin for another engagement, round-table discussions, film screenings, product demonstrations, or any other activity related to research, scholarship, and teaching activities and at the school. The format provides a platform for encouraging the dissemination of work by visitors and members of our community. The goal is to raise awareness, increase access, and better integrate such events within the public life of the school.
