INCOMBUSTIBLE: Opening Reception
Friday March 27, 2026 , 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Guest curated by Associate Professor Nichole Wiedemann with the Materials Lab, INCOMBUSTIBLE catalogues materials and tactics that resist fire with minimal reliance on additives.
INCOMBUSTIBLE proposes a material palette for a future where wildfire is a fundamental design parameter, not an exception. A year ago, Austin formally recognized that over half of its habitable land in now wildfire vulnerable –up 38% from a decade earlier– setting the stage for this exhibition. INCOMBUSTIBLE explores how architecture can respond not only with policy, but with matter itself. Curated from the vast library of building materials at the SOA, the exhibition catalogs materials and assemblies that exhibit inherent resistance through unique composition and structure, whether mineral or biological.
