Lunch 'n Learn | ICON Build

Wednesday Feb. 27, 2019 , noon to 1 p.m.
Jason talks about how Icon exists in the intersection between the fields of Materials Science, Robotics, and Software.

The Materials Lab hosted Dmitri Julius and Jason Ford, Director of Sales and Operations and the VP of Software Engineering, of ICON Build for a Lunch 'n Learn presentation. "ICON is an Austin-based construction technologies company dedicated to revolutionizing homebuilding and making dignified housing the standard for people throughout the world. Using proprietary 3D printing robotics, software and advanced materials, ICON is solving a plurality of problems in the contemporary building industry with their breakthrough technologies."

The session provided an overview of the company's goals, organizational structure, and current projects. Julius and Ford fielded many questions from students and faculty, describing the company's trial-and-error process in developing precise material ratios for the concrete mix - which must be fluid enough to be continuously fed through a hose, yet solidify quickly to support subsequent layers - as well as specifications in the International Residential Building Code, and the technology behind their printing machines.
