MAY TERM: ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY

ARC 327R.2 / 386M.3
Open to all students
David Heymann: heymann@utexas.edu

Spain’s rich history of architecture spans the Moorish to the Medieval to the Modern. It’s layered public landscapes are ideal settings to learn how photography conveys meaning about the built environment. This is important knowledge for anyone in fields related to design, as architecture – be it a room, building, square, urban sequence, landscape – is today communicated primarily through photographs or photograph-like images.

We’ll begin with daily technical exercises and field workshops over a two week stay in Valencia – with a field trip to Madrid – covering the ground rules of architectural photography and working towards how images engage editorial content. We’ll then visit architectural masterworks in Cordoba, Granada, and Sevilla before a last week in Barcelona, where we will delve into advanced and experimental forms of photographic documentation. School of Architecture Dean Heather Woofter will join us for the second half of the class as an advisor.
