Isha Santhosh // Behnisch Architekten

Tell us about your PRP firm. Where are you working?
I am currently interning at Behnisch Architekten in Stuttgart, Germany. Behnisch Architekten is a renowned German architectural firm celebrated for its innovative and sustainable designs, emphasizing environmental responsibility and user-focused spaces. The firm blends modern aesthetics with innovative technology to create dynamic, adaptable structures that promote ecological harmony and social well-being.
Do you enjoy the city you’re working in? Favorite aspects?
I truly love the city of Stuttgart and the people that I’ve met during my time here. The city is strongly rooted in German tradition while also embracing innovation, making Stuttgart a vibrant cultural experience. The people I’ve met have been incredibly welcoming, making it easy to form connections in this lively city.
What is currently on your desk? What are you working on?
My desk is currently scattered with pieces of an in-progress section model, numerous redlined plans and section drawings, and far too many coffee cups! I’m currently engaged in the design phase of a university building in Steinfurt, Germany. This experience has been incredibly enriching, allowing me to contribute to various aspects of the building design, including lighting design, structural analysis, and sustainable design technologies. During my time here, I also had the opportunity to join the Behnisch competition team, where we developed a design for an educational institute as part of a competition submittal. This diverse experience has been truly unique, enabling me to deepen my understanding of architecture, adapt to an international working environment, and even learn a bit of German.
Describe the firm culture? The office atmosphere?
Behnisch fosters an incredible work culture, where dedication to high-quality work is balanced by a vibrant, enjoyable atmosphere. Everyone here is committed to excellence, but we also make time for having fun and making connections, Each Friday, our office hosts a “Lunch Talk” series of guest speakers discussing architectural topics, followed by a shared meal with the entire office. In addition to these insightful conversations, we regularly host exhibitions, social events, and team-building activities. With a dynamic mix of experienced professionals and a large team of interns, every day is filled with energy, collaboration, and excitement.
What is the first thing you'll tell your classmates upon your return to UT?
When I return to UTSOA, the first thing I’ll share with my classmates is how immensely enriching my time abroad has been, both professionally and personally. In addition to honing my skills in the office, I had the chance to travel across Germany and the EU, where I was deeply inspired by the architectural and cultural experiences I encountered in these cities. I’ll be bringing back not only valuable architectural knowledge but also a broader understanding and appreciation of the world, which will undoubtedly enhance both my studies and professional journey.
As you’re finishing up the week, what are your plans for this weekend?
This weekend, I plan to visit Le Corbusier’s Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp, France some friends from the office! Also, as it is the most wonderful time of the year, we will be stopping by the German Christmas markets in Stuttgart to enjoy some warm winter foods and lively local performances!
