Professional Residency Program: Danny Joseph Keenan at Furman + Keil

Tell us about your PRP firm. Where are you working?
I am currently working for Furman + Keil in Austin, Texas! FKA is a smaller-sized firm, which gives it a nice, personable, and friendly vibe. They primarily work on residential projects, but right now they are breaking ground on a small conservation center, so it’s been super interesting to mull over the plans and details of that project!
What is currently on your desk? What are you working on?
Recently, I’ve been working on some presentation drawings for our website, but I've also been drawing up some details for a small residential project in Montopolis. This home has been designed following Passive House energy standards, which primarily focuses on using thicker continuous insulation and avoidance of thermal bridges to lower overall energy usage. It has been rewarding to learn about the different design decisions that can help reduce energy use & make the project more sustainable.
Describe the firm culture. The office atmosphere?
FKA is a very welcoming office culture, and the smaller size of the firm has given me a chance to get to know all the amazing people who work there. Everyone’s super friendly, and I’ve really appreciated that it's an environment where everyone genuinely wants to help you learn and develop.
What is the first thing you'll tell your classmates upon your return to UT?
I would tell them all about all the cool detailing I’ve gotten to study and learn about! FKA prides themselves on the craft of detailing & it shows in their work. For anyone who gets a chance to visit any of their projects, I would tell them to check out all the edges, corners, and intersecting parts to see the amazing level of thought in how all parts come together.
As you’re finishing up the week, what are your plans for this weekend?
I think I’m probably going to catch up with some friends this weekend at a coffee shop or bar and maybe cool off at Barton Springs!
